The Welte-Mignon T98 system, commonly referred to as “Welte green,” was introduced in 1924 by M. Welte & Söhne. The name “Welte green” originates from the distinctive green-colored paper used for the music rolls in this system. These rolls are approximately 28.6 cm (11.25 inches) wide and contain 98 rows of holes, spaced at 9 holes per inch.

The roll boxes for the T98 system were typically red or wine-red and featured a label on the front displaying the name “Welte-Mignon,” the roll number, the title, and the name of the pianist. A similar label was also affixed to the music roll itself.
